attempting to erase the selection yields a no way cursor and this dialogue box:

click OK to dismiss it, then continue to erase. the image has been rasterized, and the Eraser tool now works. however, all erased pixels are deleted permanently upon saving. to retain your original image to edit later, opt instead for a Layer Mask.

select the layer you wish to subtract from, then click the Layer Mask icon from the left on the bottom row of the Layers panel.

select the white block that appears to the right of the layer. 

select the Brush tool, then press the D key to set the foreground color to black and the background color to white. white adds to the mask, black subtracts from it. paint the mask.
